Rectangular or triangular shark eggs are usually laid near shore and attached to a stationary plant or rock. The casing is stiff and leathery to protect the growing embryo and its nurishing yolk. Depending on the species and the water temperature, shark eggs can take more than a year to hatch. Many species of sharks hatch their eggs while still within the mother and give birth to live young.
